Product Overview

The 316L stainless steel absorption tower is a wet gas absorption vessel used to remove acidic pollutants, water-soluble gases and selected VOC components from industrial exhaust streams. It is also called a 316L absorption tower, 316L stainless steel scrubber, acid gas absorption tower, alkali absorption tower, gas washing tower or packed absorption tower.

Exhaust gas enters the tower from the bottom or side and flows upward through the packing and spray section. Absorption liquid such as water, alkaline solution or a specialized reagent is sprayed from the top, forming a liquid film on the packing surface. Acidic and water-soluble components are absorbed through gas-liquid contact, and the purified gas passes through a demister before discharge.

316L stainless steel contains molybdenum, giving it significantly better resistance to chloride-induced corrosion and wet corrosive environments than 304 stainless steel. This makes 316L absorption towers especially suitable for chemical, pharmaceutical, electroplating, petrochemical and coastal industrial applications where long-term reliability is required.

Why 316L Stainless Steel for Absorption Towers

Absorption towers often operate under wet, corrosive and fluctuating conditions. Acid mist carryover, chloride ions, temperature variation, condensate formation and continuous water contact can accelerate material degradation. While 304 stainless steel is suitable for mildly corrosive service, it may be insufficient for exhaust streams with higher chloride content or long-term wet corrosion.

316L stainless steel provides a higher safety margin than 304 in wet corrosive environments. Its molybdenum content improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while its austenitic structure offers good weldability, formability and fabrication reliability for absorption tower shells, packing supports, spray systems and circulation components.

Structure & Working Principle

The 316L stainless steel absorption tower is a vertical cylindrical vessel made of 316L stainless steel, with gas inlet, gas outlet, inspection door, drain connection and supporting structure. Exhaust gas flows through the tower while absorption liquid is circulated by a pump and sprayed through nozzles.

Inside the tower, the packing layer increases gas-liquid contact area and improves absorption efficiency for acid gases and water-soluble pollutants. The demister section removes entrained droplets from purified gas to reduce carryover and downstream corrosion. The circulation tank collects absorption liquid for reuse, with optional pH monitoring, automatic dosing, temperature control and filtration systems.

The tower is manufactured from 316L stainless steel in vertical absorption tower or packed scrubber configuration. Diameter is typically customized between 800 mm and 4000 mm, and height is determined according to packing height, spray stages and site conditions.
