    Marine Scrubber Tower

    Product Overview

The marine scrubber tower is the core vessel of a ship exhaust gas cleaning system, also called an EGCS scrubber tower, marine desulfurization tower, ship scrubber tower or marine wet scrubber. It is installed on the ship exhaust line to remove sulfur oxides and particulate matter from engine and boiler flue gas before discharge to atmosphere.

Ship exhaust gas enters the scrubber tower and contacts seawater or alkaline washing liquid through spray nozzles and packing or spray sections. SOx is absorbed and neutralized, particulate matter is washed out, and the cleaned gas passes through a demister before discharge. Depending on system design, the tower can be applied in open-loop, closed-loop or hybrid EGCS configurations.

Stainless steel marine scrubber towers are widely fabricated from 316L, 2205, 2507 and 254SMO to resist seawater, chloride ions, acidic condensate and high-humidity marine environments.

Why Stainless Steel Marine Scrubber Tower

Marine scrubber towers operate under severe wet corrosion conditions. The internal environment involves seawater or recirculated washwater, acidic sulfurous compounds, chloride ions, temperature fluctuation and continuous gas-liquid contact. In closed-loop or hybrid systems, chloride concentration may further increase due to recirculation.

Stainless steel provides higher mechanical strength and longer service life than coated carbon steel, and better structural reliability than non-metallic materials for large-diameter scrubber towers. Material selection is usually graded by corrosion severity: 316L for mild wet corrosion zones, 2205 duplex stainless steel for seawater and chloride-rich sections, and 2507 or 254SMO for high-chloride, high-temperature or critical corrosion areas.

    Structure & Working Principle

The marine scrubber tower is a vertical or compact cylindrical vessel made of stainless steel, with gas inlet, gas outlet, spray section, packing or demister section, drain connection, inspection openings and supporting structure. Exhaust gas flows through the tower while washing liquid is circulated by seawater pumps or process pumps.

In open-loop systems, seawater is used as the washing medium and discharged after treatment. In closed-loop systems, freshwater with alkaline additive is recirculated, and washwater is treated before discharge. Hybrid systems can switch between modes according to navigation area and emission requirements.

The tower can be designed with flanged segments to facilitate transport and installation in confined ship spaces. Internal components include spray nozzles, packing supports, demisters, circulation piping, pH monitoring interfaces and corrosion-resistant linings where required.

    Typical Specifications

The marine scrubber tower is manufactured from stainless steel in cylindrical or compact tower configuration. Diameter, height, wall thickness and segment layout are customized according to engine power, exhaust gas flow, SOx removal requirement, ship arrangement and installation space.

Internal parts include spray nozzles, packing or spray layers, demister, circulation connections, inspection doors, drain outlets and supporting structures. Exact design should be determined according to EGCS process data, seawater or washwater quality, exhaust temperature, vibration conditions and shipyard installation requirements.

    Typical Applications

Stainless steel marine scrubber towers are used in container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, PCTC vessels, offshore vessels and other merchant ships equipped with exhaust gas cleaning systems. They can be applied in open-loop EGCS, closed-loop EGCS and hybrid EGCS systems to reduce SOx emissions and support compliance with IMO sulfur emission requirements.

The tower can be integrated with seawater pumps, washwater treatment units, pH monitoring systems, demisters, exhaust dampers and emission monitoring equipment. For retrofit projects, flanged segment design helps reduce installation difficulty and supports integration with existing funnel and exhaust duct arrangements.
