Custom 254SMO marine desulfurization tower for ship exhaust gas SOx removal and seawater scrubbing. Designed and manufactured by Wuxi Xinchangyuan Equipment Manufacturing with spray, demister and circulation systems for marine EGCS and high-chloride flue gas treatment.
254SMO Marine Desulfurization Tower
The 254SMO marine desulfurization tower is a high-corrosion-resistant wet scrubbing vessel used to remove sulfur dioxide, acid mist and other acidic pollutants from marine engine or boiler exhaust gas. It is also called a 254SMO ship scrubber, marine EGCS scrubber tower, super austenitic stainless steel desulfurization tower, seawater scrubber tower or marine exhaust gas washing tower.
Exhaust gas enters the tower and flows upward through the spray and demister section. Seawater or alkaline washing liquid is sprayed from the top, forming a liquid film that absorbs SOx and acidic components. The purified gas passes through a demister before discharge, while the washing liquid is collected, treated and reused or discharged according to system design.
254SMO is a super austenitic stainless steel with approximately 6% molybdenum, high chromium, high nickel and added nitrogen. Its pitting resistance equivalent number is typically above 42, giving it far higher resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion than 304 or 316L stainless steel. This makes 254SMO especially suitable for marine desulfurization towers where seawater, high chloride concentration, acid condensate and long-term wet corrosion are present.
Marine desulfurization towers often operate under severe conditions, including seawater washing, acid mist carryover, chloride concentration in circulation systems, temperature fluctuation and long service life requirements. In such environments, conventional stainless steels may suffer from pitting, crevice corrosion or stress corrosion cracking.
254SMO offers significantly higher resistance to chloride attack than 316L and is widely used in marine scrubbers, seawater systems, flue gas desulfurization equipment and offshore process equipment. Its high molybdenum and nitrogen content improve the stability of the passive film, while its austenitic structure provides good weldability, formability and structural reliability for scrubber shells, spray sections, demister supports and circulation components.
The 254SMO marine desulfurization tower is a vertical cylindrical vessel made of 254SMO stainless steel, with gas inlet, gas outlet, inspection door, drain connection and supporting structure. Exhaust gas flows through the tower while washing liquid is circulated by a pump and sprayed through nozzles.
Inside the tower, the spray section increases gas-liquid contact area and improves absorption efficiency for SO₂ and acidic gases. The demister section removes entrained droplets from purified gas to reduce carryover and downstream corrosion. The circulation system collects washing liquid for reuse, with optional pH monitoring and dosing system to maintain stable neutralization performance.
254SMO is recommended for marine desulfurization towers where chloride concentration, seawater exposure, acid condensate or long-term wet corrosion make 304 or 316L stainless steel insufficient. It is especially suitable for seawater scrubbing, closed-loop circulation systems, high-humidity exhaust gas and marine EGCS applications with strict reliability requirements.
For mildly corrosive or low-chloride conditions, 316L may still be considered as a cost-effective option. For very high chloride concentration, high temperature or long service life requirements, 254SMO provides a higher safety margin than 316L and 2205 duplex stainless steel. Material selection should be based on exhaust gas composition, washing liquid type, chloride concentration, temperature, operating mode and expected service life.
The tower is manufactured from 254SMO stainless steel, UNS S31254 / EN 1.4547, in vertical marine scrubber or desulfurization tower configuration. Diameter and height are customized according to engine exhaust gas volume, SOx load, space layout and installation conditions. Wall thickness is designed according to diameter, structural load, temperature and process requirements.
Internal parts include spray nozzles, demister, circulation pump, piping, inspection ports and supporting structures. Exact dimensions, number of spray layers and connection configuration should be determined according to gas volume, pollutant concentration, temperature, humidity and marine installation conditions.
254SMO marine desulfurization towers can be used in ship exhaust gas treatment, marine boiler flue gas desulfurization, marine EGCS scrubber systems, offshore platform exhaust gas washing, seawater scrubbing systems, and industrial flue gas desulfurization with high chloride content. They can also be integrated with spray systems, demisters, circulation tanks, water treatment units and downstream polishing equipment.

What is a 254SMO marine desulfurization tower used for?
It is used to remove sulfur dioxide, acid mist and other acidic pollutants from marine or industrial exhaust gas through wet scrubbing, especially in seawater or high-chloride environments.
Why choose 254SMO instead of 316L for marine scrubbers?
254SMO contains about 6% molybdenum and has a PREN value typically above 42, giving it much higher resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion than 316L. It is more suitable for seawater scrubbing and long-term marine operation.
Can the 254SMO marine desulfurization tower be customized?
Yes. Tower diameter, height, wall thickness, spray layers, demister and circulation system can be customized according to actual process conditions.
Can it be used together with a WESP system?
Yes. A 254SMO desulfurization tower can be arranged upstream of a WESP to reduce SOx, acid mist, dust and moisture load, helping the downstream polishing system operate more stably.
