    Electric Tar Precipitator

    Product Overview

An electric tar precipitator, also called an electrostatic tar mist collector, is a high-voltage electrostatic separation device designed to remove tar mist, oil mist, asphalt fumes, fine particulate matter and condensable pollutants from industrial gas streams. It is widely used in coking, coal gasification, carbon, rubber, asphalt mixing, biomass pyrolysis and related processes where tar-laden gas must be cleaned before downstream equipment or emission control systems.

The equipment creates a strong high-voltage electrostatic field between the discharge electrodes and collecting electrodes. When tar-laden gas passes through the field, tar mist and fine particles become charged and migrate to the collecting electrode surface. The captured tar then flows down by gravity or is removed by flushing, while cleaned gas exits from the top or outlet duct. Depending on process requirements, it can be configured as a dry-type unit with gravity drainage or as a wet-type unit with water flushing.

    How It Works

    • High-voltage corona discharge: A high-voltage DC power supply generates a strong electrostatic field between the discharge wires and grounded collecting electrodes.

    • Tar mist charging: Tar droplets, oil mist, asphalt smoke and fine particles in the gas stream capture ions and become electrically charged.

    • Electrostatic collection: Charged tar mist migrates to the collecting electrode surface under electrostatic force and adheres to the electrode wall.

    • Tar drainage or flushing: Collected tar flows down by gravity into a bottom collection tank, or is washed away by a wet flushing system to prevent electrode fouling and maintain stable operation.

    Key Features

    • High tar mist removal efficiency: effectively captures submicron tar mist, oil mist, asphalt smoke and fine particulate matter.

    • Low pressure drop: straight-through honeycomb or tubular structure provides low flow resistance and stable fan operation.

    • Honeycomb or tubular electrode modules: available in honeycomb, tubular or concentric configurations to suit different gas volumes and tar loads.

    • Stainless steel electrode components: collecting electrodes, discharge wires and internal modules can be manufactured from stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant materials.

    • Dry or wet cleaning options: supports gravity drainage, steam cleaning, water flushing or automatic cleaning systems according to tar viscosity and process conditions.

    • Customized engineering design: configured based on gas volume, temperature, tar concentration, moisture content, oxygen level and installation space.

    Typical Applications

    • Coke oven gas and coal gas tar mist removal in coking and coal chemical plants

    • Carbon plant and carbon black plant asphalt fume treatment

    • Rubber pyrolysis, tire recycling and rubber vulcanization exhaust treatment

    • Biomass gasification, wood carbonization and pyrolysis gas cleaning

    • Asphalt mixing plants and waterproofing material production exhaust

    • Ceramic kiln and industrial furnace oily fume treatment

    • Gas purification before RTO, catalytic combustion, absorption towers or downstream emission control systems

    • Removal of tar mist, oil mist, asphalt smoke, PM2.5 and condensable organic aerosols

    FAQ

What is the difference between an electric tar precipitator and a wet electrostatic precipitator?
Both use high-voltage electrostatic separation. An electric tar precipitator is mainly used for tar mist, oil mist and asphalt fumes, while a wet electrostatic precipitator is more commonly applied to PM2.5, acid mist, droplets and aerosol polishing after wet flue gas treatment.

Can it be used for high-viscosity tar?
Yes. For high-viscosity tar, asphalt smoke or oily mist, the unit can be designed with honeycomb electrodes, heating insulation, flushing systems or automatic cleaning structures to reduce fouling risk.

    What materials are used?
Collecting electrodes, discharge wires and internal components can be made from stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant materials based on gas composition and customer requirements.

Is it available in different structures?
Yes. It can be supplied in honeycomb, tubular or concentric structures, with vertical or horizontal layouts, and can be customized according to site conditions and process requirements.
